National
Discover how national leaders can shape food waste policy to help the United States achieve its goal of reducing food loss and waste by half.
Legislative Advocacy
Congressional action can be key to transformative change. FLPC regularly publishes reports with policy recommendations and responds to requests from Congressional offices to answer questions about food waste policy, educating and equipping legislators and their staff with information on food loss and waste issues and policy best practices. Often in partnership with advocates, we provide legislators with the information and tools necessary to design, propose, and champion federal legislation that can impact food loss and waste, including the Farm Bill.
Administrative Advocacy
FLPC actively communicates with government agencies, offering feedback, comments, and insights on rules and regulations. Our advocacy informs agencies like the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on strategic opportunities to mitigate food loss and waste effectively.
Campaign Spotlight: Not Really Expired
It’s time for Congress to pass legislation establishing a uniform, nation-wide food date labeling system. Visit FLPC’s Not Really Expired campaign and watch our award-winning film, which unpack the widespread issues caused by confusing date labels and proposes a comprehensive solution to tackle food waste in America.
Partner Spotlight: MITRE and Household Food Waste
Dive into the dynamics of household food waste with insights from MITRE’s 2023 baseline study. With nearly half of all food waste occurring at home, this analysis helped provide more clarity on top causes of food waste and types of wasted food. FLPC was a partner on this study, and has worked with MITRE to provide legal and policy insights to inform their research and solutions.
Zero Food Waste Coalition
Join the Zero Food Waste Coalition, a national effort to inform and influence U.S. food waste policy at the federal, state, and local levels in order to accelerate progress and build momentum by bringing together stakeholders from across the food system. As a founding member along with ReFED, World Wildlife Fund, and NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), FLPC provides ZFWC with legal and policy research, analysis, and guidance.
